Becas Proves Do-Gooders DO Have More Fun

Having fun while doing good, a fantastic combination that was afforded to the three hundred glamorous and generous Vallartenses who attended the March 6, 2008 Becas Ball. The scene was straight out of Hollywood - a sea of elegantly appointed tables grouped around a large, lighted dance floor and a view of the waters of the Bay of Banderas gently lapping the shore.

The Who's Who of the area mingled to the music of Vallarta's own Los Bambinos during the opening cocktail hour, compliments of the Westin Resort and Spa, where the prevailing mood reflected happiness, generosity, friendship, magnanimity, joy and, yes, magic.

As the guests moved from the cocktail venue to our reserved places at the unique square tables set for twelve, I was impressed with the incredible members and supporters of the America-Mexico Foundation/Becas Vallarta who since the early sixties have been giving of themselves, in time and treasure, to lend a hand to the young people of Puerto Vallarta.

How thrilled Bernice Starr, our founder and mentor to hundreds of Becados, would have been to hear the announcements made by our Presidents Mariel and Carlos Fregoso! They introduced Erika Ibarra and María Beatriz Peña Mariscal, happy recent graduates from CUC, Vallarta's branch of the University of Guadalajara, who were able to reach that educational goal through Becas Vallarta.

She then accepted a check for almost $7000 Pesos from Los Bambinos, who for the fourth year donated 10% of the yearly proceeds from the sale of their CDs. Los Bambinos have also performed, taking no fee, at this ball and the last three balls. These brothers along with their cousin, are not only fabulous musicians striving for big time success, but fine young men who are determined to finish their educations while never forgetting to help those less fortunate.

Presidents Mariel and Carlos Fregoso recognized our first "Becas Compadre," (donor of $5000 USD or more) Mr. David Berry who was represented by his beautiful daughter, Patricia and her husband, as well as his Associate, Pablo Aleman. And when they introduced our very first "Becas Comadre," María Elena Ramon Castillón, my heart filled as I know Bernice's would have.

Maria was the Administrator of Condominium La Palapa where Husband and I have lived for almost twenty years. And what an administrator she was - efficient, caring, trustworthy, hardworking, and everything one could want in an administrator and a friend.

Not ever compromising her position, she was able to become a real friend to many of us owners, one of whom was Gary Jones. Gary depended on María for many things. Though he was a young man (compared to Husband and me everyone is young) he became ill and sadly did not survive.

But he is surviving through what took place at this Becas Ball. Gary's will proved his love for Vallarta and the people here. His wish was to help economically challenged girls and boys of Vallarta get an education. He entrusted María to sell his condominium, invest the proceeds and use the earnings for his cause.

María, being a conscientious person, investigated all avenues of helping young people with their schooling. She came to the conclusion that there was no better way to help the kids than to affiliate this bequest with Becas Vallarta.

So María, Administrator of the estate, proudly presented a check for $80,000 pesos from the "Daniel Jack McGregory Scholarship," funded by the estate of Gary Jones, making her our very first "Becas Comadre." Well done Gary and María!

After the presentations a gourmet three course meal was beautifully served by the great waiters of the Westin. Accompanying this meal was complimentary white and red wine and, of course, cocktails could be ordered. Then the fun really began! A huge stage, built high so that everyone had a good view, exploded with the incredible Grupo Odisea Show from Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco.

The sea-scented venue was aggrandized by glamorous gals and guys singing and dancing backed by musicians who one of the guests said were as good if not better than anything she had seen in Vegas.

The lighted dance floor soon filled with swaying bodies to the oldies and gyrating ones to the new. No matter old or new, that unique Latin beat had us all moving our hips in ways we never thought possible.

Interrupting the dancing for just a short while, MC/Auctioneer Nathan Clakley from Walnut Creek, California and Puerto Vallarta, took over the dance floor to tell everyone how much he values what Becas Vallarta does for the community and showed his devotion to the cause by conducting a spirited and lucrative live auction.

There was energetic bidding on a 5-day stay in the Boston's famous Lenox Hotel, including airfare, as well as on the 2 Puerto Vallarta items: Dinner for 6 under the stars at the luxurious Villa Verano donated by long time Becas supporters Burt Hixson and Gerry Battle and a 2 night stay with dinner for 2 at the unique and fashionable Hacienda San Angel.

And bids came fast and furiously for 3 nights for 4 people in the Grand Sala Suite at La Casa Encantada in the famous Mexican pueblo Patzcuaro, Michoacan and 2 nights at the exclusive El Careyes Resort in Barra de Navidad, Jalisco. A huge thank you to all who donated these prizes and those who bought them!

After the Live Auction, guests were told to check under their chair cushions (yes, the chairs had cushions) to see which person had a surprise gift envelope. Squeals of delight (and a few groans from those of us not sitting in the lucky seats,) ensued.

The gifts, all donated by our loyal business supporters, included lunch for 2 at The Beach House, a facial from
Salon Diva, dinner for 2 at Polo's, Dinner for 2 at Archie's Wok, dinner for 2 at Kaiser Maximilian, Dinner for 2 at La Petite, dinner for 2 at Tony's Please, a facial at Xihuitl, dinner for 2 at Hola Hotel, dinner for 4 at Barcelona Tapas, dinner for 4 at Agave Grill, a hair cut, manicure and pedicure at Elle Salon, dinner for 2 and wine at Thierry's Prime Steak House, dinner for 2 with wine at Café des Artistes, dinner for 2 at Angelo's Italian Cuisine, a flower arrangement from Flowers to Go, dinner for 2 at Vista Grill, dinner for 2 at Tikul, 2 weeks at Curves, Dinner for 2 at Trattoria Michel, lunch for 2 at The Vallarta Botanical Garden, 2 tickets to "Dolly Would - If Kenny Could" at the Santa Barbara Theater, breakfast, lunch or dinner for 2 at Epoca, 2 hand decorated pillows from Villa María Decoration, color, cut, blow dry by Len and facial by Sara from Blu by Len. Thanks to all of the donors and congrats to all of the winners.

After the surprise gifts, the Silent Auction closed and guests could find out whether they had the highest bid for 2 rounds of golf for 2 at the exclusive Four Seasons Golf Club donated by Lynne Bairstow of the Grupo Dine, 2 nights at La Casa de Espiritu Alegre in Guanajuato, 2 nights at Villa del Ensueno in Tlaquepaque, Chef's Table for Six at Teatro Limon in Puerto Vallarta, 2 nights at Harrah's Paris Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and 2 nights in the Miami, Florida Four Season's Hotel and Golf Club.

Another thank you to the donors and the high bidders. The people who donate and who buy at these events support a cause that I believe is the most noble of causes - helping a Juan or a Juanita get the education he or she couldn't get without a little boost from those of us who have been fortunate enough to have something, time or money, that we can share.

No one wanted the evening to end, except perhaps the tired scholarship students who helped with everything under the care of Becas member Mercedez de Martinez, Juana Mariana Malpica, Celia Astorga, Jesús Marcial Rubio, Leonardo Daniel García, Amanda Paola Cruz García, Angelina Jeguelez Laguna, Omar Reynoso, Moisés Juárez Sánchez, Yolanda Sandoval and Vanesa Janet Gambete.

But after a dramatic fire dance performed by Ensamble Jaguar under director Oliver Fernandez and a surprise change of costume and style by Grupo Odisea, the white clad Mariachis brought the fabulous evening to an end!

Where to begin to thank everyone for such a memorable and important evening? I'll start with the management and staff of the Westin Resort and Spa for their generosity and their excellence.

Then, of course, a gigantic thank you to the Co-Chairwomen, Buri Gray, Elinor Prawer and Pat Bendix! They have worked for months to make this the best ball ever and in my opinion, they reached their goal!

They will tell you they could not have done it with the tireless and selfless work of Vallarta Wedds Planners, Paula Arredondo, Johanna Otero & Estrella Rodriguez, who took no fee, worked for months making the contacts, persuading the vendors and entertainers to cut their prices to the bone, setting up the magnificent venue and seeing to every detail until the last sign of the event faded into the night.

Those gals sure do know how to throw a party! They arranged for everything from the publicity donated by La Explosiva 590 radio and the spectacular sign outside Sam's donated by Grand Display, to the unique square tables and cushioned chairs by Karla Rangel's Trendy Mob, to the exquisite flowers on those tables from Vodax Detalle de Lujo, to the lighted dance floor by Winners, to that fabulous Grupo Odisea who reduced their price to less than half their usual fee, to the fireworks by Guadalupe Rodriguez and the Fire Show by Ensamble Jaguar. Thank you all!

Another huge thank you to our Presidents Mariel de Fregoso and Carlos Fregoso. Their dedication to this cause is truly incredible. And for sure a big thank you to our Treasurer who has stayed with us for many years, keeping our finances straight and in the black, our beautiful Cuca de Niño. Also thank you to Margaret Tolton who struggled to place you at the table of your choice and to Joan Cannon who kept track of all the donations of the fabulous prizes.

Can't stop without thanking all the members who sold tickets to the Ball, who solicited the auction items and the surprise gifts and who always come through when called upon. And of course thank you to all who bought tickets and came to the dance and to all who bought tickets and didn't come but donated the tickets so others could attend. You all are the best.

¿Qué Tal, Compadre?

Our friend Melchor always greets his brother Gaspar with ¿Que tal, Compadre? (What's Up?) I asked why he would refer to his brother with a title, not a name. Even though I had been at the christening of his first child, Martha Yesenia and knew that Gaspar had been her Padrino (Godfather) which in turn made him Melchor's Compadre, I really didn't understand the deep significance of the term.

Melchor, in his best teacher's voice, explained that to be one's Compadre in this culture is the ultimate status. A Compadre is a person to whom one has entrusted the welfare of his precious child in a ceremony that, while performed in a church, really transcends organized religion, and signifies a relationship between two people on a higher plane than even a blood relationship. WOW!

At a recent Becas Vallarta meeting we discussed our need to generate more funds to sustain and expand our scholarship program for the large number of Puerto Vallarta girls and boys with great scholastic ability and small economic resources.

It was suggested that we try to tap into a viable source here in our town: the banks, automobile dealerships, large companies that are bringing in their wares and developers who are building the condos to house the people who will keep those businesses going. After all, who will benefit more from an educated Puerto Vallarta populace than those enterprises?

Our brainstorming ended with a consensus that we should initiate a program where a donation of at least $5000 USD would make the donor a "Compadre of Becas," a person to whom we would entrust the welfare of our precious children now and in the future.

The dynamic duo Mary Megin de Franco and Alfredo Franco, long time Becas members and recent purchasers of one of the condos at the luxurious Molino de Agua, suggested we ask the developer of that complex to be our first "Compadre."

I wrote the solicitation letter, Linda Wirth created a Power Point presentation on CD, Mary and Alfredo made the arrangements with Carl Timothy, of TimothyFuller, the Real Estate Company handling the sale of the condos, to hand deliver the materials to the developer Mr. Berry in Madera, California.

In a matter of days, Mr. Berry responded with a resounding YES to our invitation to become our first Compadre. He made the $5000 donation through another of his favorite charities, the Madera Rotary Club, Madera, California.

This week, his associate Pablo Aleman, President and Administrador de Hoteles, presented the generous check to Becas Vallarta, A.C. President Mariel de Fregoso and America-Mexico Foundation, Inc. President, Carlos Fregoso.

Mary and Alfredo, Carl Timothy, Mario Preciado and I were delighted to witness this happy event and I am delighted to say, "Thank You Mr. Berry and Señor Aleman for your faith in our organizations and your agreement with us that education is the key to open many doors for the residents of our paradise by the sea."

Now I'd like to say a word to all the other developers and businesses in Puerto Vallarta. If you are readers of my columns you already know that the America-Mexico Foundation, Inc. and its Mexican partner, Becas Vallarta, A.C. have given thousands of scholarships to local girls and boys.

From its inception in the 1960's when ex-pat Bernice Starr, a California school teacher, organized a few Mexican and American friends to raise funds to send the neighborhood young people to Vallarta's first junior high school - up through this year, the America-Mexico Foundation has depended on the good will and support of this incredible community for its successes.

One of our most sensational successes is that of Dr. Luz María Rodriguez, who as a young girl had a dream of becoming a doctor even though her father, the head of a large family with very limited economic resources, thought formal education was only for his sons.

Luz María realized her dreams with the AMF as her sponsor, mentor and cheering section. She received her Doctor of Cardiology from the prestigious Academic Hospital in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and has gone on to becoming internationally sought as a speaker and teacher.

And in the forefront of Vallarta's vibrant community are doctors, dentists, lawyers, teachers, business men and women, all recipients of AMF scholarships, and all contributing greatly both to Vallarta and to the Foundation.

We would love to tell you more! How great will it be when hundreds of you join Mr. David Berry as Becas Compadres? So call us and we'll come to you! Call me at 223-1371 or call President Carlos Fregoso at 221-0789 or Jerry Lafferty at 221-6156. We await your calls!

And use those numbers to call for tickets to the Thursday, March 6, 2008 "Fantasia by the Sea Becas Ball" at the Hotel Westin Resort and Spa. Gotta go, my phone is ringing!

BECAS THROWS A POSADA PARTY FOR STUDENTS

Every Christmas, Becas Vallarta A.C. traditionally hosts an event for the current crop of students who are receiving scholarships grants from them. Although it has been called the Christmas posada for many years, the truth is there was not all that Christmassy about them, nor was it a "Posada" in the traditional Mexican fashion. This year, under the leadership of Becas' President Mariel Fregoso, all that changed.

Invitations went out to the 185 students that qualified to attend. As usual, the party began with the handing out of 73 diplomas to the outstanding students who had accomplished at least a 9.5 grade average in the past year.

Then came the singing of the traditional posada songs, splendidly led by Mariel Fregoso, working the microphone like a professional as she moved around the seated semi-circle of students. Not all the Becas committee could keep up with the words, but if not, they used body language to prove they were with it in spirit.

After the singing, the action moved to the custom of breaking piñatas by whacking them with sticks to release the candies hidden inside. Not easy to do when blindfolded and the piñata is continually on the move along a suspended rope. But the seven piñatas were dealt with one by one in good time.

Over the past weeks, Becas members and students had been selling raffle tickets for cash prizes. Now came the draw for the winners and, happily enough, both turned out to be scholarship students. The $5000 peso prize went to Moses Juarez who attends the ETI. (actually, his sister Yasmin Juarez Sanchez was holding the winning ticket.) The second prize, worth $3000 pesos, went to Ricardo Gonzalez Rivera, who is in his first semester at Regional Puerto Vallarta. Again, it was his mother, Maria Riviera Palma, who handed in the winning ticket.

Then it was time to eat. The main item on the menu, replacing the "gringo" sandwiches of former years, were chicken-filled tamales, specially ordered from Sergio Valle, whose "Mama Petris" varieties of tamales are the best in town. It was noticeable that, when Mariel Fregoso announced there would be tamales served this year, there was a loud murmur of appreciation from the students. Each of them also received a bag containing candy, nuts and cookies. To wash things down, Coca Cola's gift of their Fresca brand was served.

The final touch was the handing out of a furry toy to each student as a memento to take away.

These events take a lot of preparation and hard work on the day. The efforts of many Becas members for helping this turn out to be such a successful day is much appreciated.

Many of the students do not get much in the way of recognition in their lives, so this annual event has a meaningful place in the year, along with the financial and counseling support that Becas provides throughout the year to all these smart but economically deprived children.

CRUZADA ALTRUISTA

Becas Vallarta and Agape continue selling the cloth souvenir bracelets in various locales.  Recently, permission has been granted to sell bracelets at the very busy port that welcomes many Cruise Ships to Vallarta each week.  The bracelets sell for $20 pesos and make great stocking stuffers and remembrances of the incredible charitable organizations constantly at work in Puerto Vallarta.

BECAS BREAKFAST WAKES UP THE MALECON

Early morning strollers on the Malecón this week heard an unaccustomed sound that sent passing pelicans swerving nervously out to sea.  What could it be?  The first of the season’s Becas Vallarta’s breakfasts is what it was!  Over a hundred voices raised in joyous greetings and swapping the latest gossip echoing happily from the Vitea restaurant.  Relative quiet only lasted for the time that an excellent breakfast plate of scrambled eggs, beans and a delicious chicken crepe was served, following up an ample supply of sweet rolls, orange juice and unlimited coffee.

The instruction to “Love thy Neighbor” was working here on two levels.  Most obviously, was a group of people that cared and respected each other.  The bonds of friendship ran strongly amongst them.  At a deeper level, there was the sense of common values and purpose that Becas Vallarta provides.  The satisfaction of being part of an altruistic cause that, year after year, has provided scholarships for hundreds of bright but needy kids.  It is cooperation at the personal level that grows to finally shape the life of the community.

One simple piece of evidence that this was a morning where everyone was prepared to linger was that, at the close of the event, when the lucky raffle winners were announced, every one of the winners was still around to claim their prize.  That doesn’t always happen!

Thanks are due to Bernhard Guth and Ulf Henriksson for giving the Becas Breakfasts a great send off.  The next in the series will be held on Tuesday November 27th, at La Hacienda Restaurant.  Becas Vallarta is expecting an even greater turnout since many more winter visitors will have arrived in town by then.

Tickets can be obtained from Buri Gray (221-5285), Polly Vicars (223-1372) Mariel Fregoso (221-0789).

PALOMAZO CULINARIO

For the fourth consecutive year, Casa Magna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort will open its doors to the altruism of the Palomazo Culinario on Monday, October 29, 2007 at 6 pm.  This is "un evento de amigos para los amigos" (an event of friends for friends) sponsored by the Marriott Casa Magna, Café des Artistes, Xitomates, La Palapa, Vista Grill, Restaurante Azul,y Maximiliano.  The chefs will prepare a six-course dinner, with wine, and there will be great live entertainment, raffles of outstanding gifts and maybe some surprises for the guests.  One of the best things about this annual event is that 100% of the $700 peso ticket price goes directly to four of Vallarta's most important charities, Agape, Arturo and the Children of God, Asilo de Ancianos San Juan Diego and Becas Vallarta, all institutions dedicated to providing aid to people who need it most.  Tickets are on sale in the sponsoring restaurants and from members of any of the charities.  The three previous Palomazo Culinario dinners have been incredible evenings with beautiful surroundings, food to die for, great entertainment and incredible fellowship.  To see the renowned chefs toiling with no recompense and know that the Marriott and those restaurant owners put on this magnificent event solely to help those who need it most will bring lumps to your throats and perhaps a tear to your eyes.  Truly, you should not miss this event as it is unique in concept and in fact.

NINO FOPPIANI JEWELRY RAFFLES

Nino, at age 14, had his first showing of oil paintings in the Museum of Miraflores in his home town of Lima, Peru.  He studied law and political science at the National University of Lima while working in the art studio of Suarez Vertiz where he experimented in many art forms including paper mache, copper, silver, bronze, acrylic and watercolor paints as well as exploring his own spiritual self.  After graduation with a degree in law he followed many paths, including stints in Caracas, Venezuela, Arizona and New York- - - studying art and experimenting in ceramics, blown glass and stained glass, but always returning to his love of working with gold.  In New York he divided his life - - - work with the Diamond Center - - - deep investigations into the spiritual world including two years in a monastery.  At the age of 32, having moved to Caracas, Venezuela, he decided to concentrate on the design and fabrication of fine jewelry.  He continued his spiritual studies, but also, soon afterwards, reacquainted himself with a lost love, Beatriz, whom he soon married.

Nino says he has always worked with passion and that the art itself inspires and sustains him.  He is constantly experimenting with his jewelry and his life.  Lucky for Becas Vallarta, he and Beatriz are long time friends of Buri and Peter Gray.  Through them he knows the foundation and has added it to his many acts of generosity by donating exquisite pieces of his original jewelry for Becas to raffle.  Presently we are selling chances to win an original 18 carat-white gold necklace adorned with tiny diamonds and crowned with a large black pearl!  Tickets are $200 pesos ($20 US) and the winner will be decided by the National Lottery of November 20, 2007.  Nino promises to donate several more pieces of his exquisite jewelry for raffles throughout the school year.

BECAS BALL 2008

On Thursday, March 6, 2008 The Westin Resort & Spa will be the scene of the annual Becas Ball.  Elinor Prawer and Buri Gray, planners of the incredibly beautiful and successful 2007 Becas Ball, are already hard at work devising their plans for an "underwater world" for the participants.  Watch for e-mail notifications when tickets are available.

BANANA CANTINA CHARITY NIGHTS

Debbi and Mike Eagan of the Restaurant Banana Cantina in Vallarta's Romantic Zone have designated Wednesdays a Local Celebrity Night.  The owners contibute 10% of the house to the charity of the "celebrity."  Peter Gray and Polly Vicars of Becas Vallarta were Beca's "celebrities" last year and Debbi has graciously extended another invitation to Becas for the coming year.  Banana Cantina was voted Best Moderate Restaurant in 2007 in the very popular Puerto Vallarta Reader's Choice.  Watch for e-mail announcements for dates and celebrities.

SPECIAL FRIENDS OF BECAS VALLARTA

In addition to our hardworking members we have many special friends who are invaluable to our foundation.  As with our scholarship students and our foundation members, they are too numerous to individually highlight, so for now meet at least a few of them.

MELCHOR CORTES CORTES

Did you ever have a friend who no matter what was asked, would come through?  That is the kind of friend that Melchor Cortés is to Becas Vallarta.  For many years, he translated from English to Spanish every letter, article, document and newsletter from Becas Vallarta.  Not only did he do the translating, but he guided the many Becas volunteers in the proper Mexican way of doing our myriad chores and always kept us from getting into trouble.  In the past several years, since he opened his own Spanish Language School, Becas members have done most of the translating, but his telephone number is still at the top of the list of those we call when help is needed and gratefully he still never turns us down.  ¡Un amigo muy, muy bueno!

THOMAS RASCH

Tom lives in Alameda, California, but his heart is right here in Puerto Vallarta.  For many years while "vacationing" here he has been a part of the crew that moved and helped with the setup of the scads of large objects d'art that members collected for auction prizes at our annual Becas Ball, bought tickets to every event even if he wasn't going to be here to go, and used our Special Gift Donations to honor friends birthdays and other special occasions.  He champions our efforts and gives invaluable input and ideas for making Becas even better.  Trying to get the bidding going on a bicycle at one Becas Ball, his top bid left him with a brand new bicycle for which he had absolutely no use.  The next day one of the lucky locals who was helping with the ball was able to thrill his kids with that new bike.  You can't find a better friend than our Tomas!

JOSE VALENTIN RANGEL MOLINA (CHEO)

Cheo is a Vanezuelan with dual Mexican citizenship.  When Peter Gray was  honcho ofProctor & Gamble Latin America located in Venezuela, Cheo worked for him and Buri.  When, 14 years ago, the Grays retired to Puerto Vallarta, Cheo opted to come with them.  He is a man of many talents who makes unique flower-fruit-vegetable table arrangements and is master of many of the graces that make a house a home.  His contribution to Becas is his amazing ability to sell anything to anyone.  He always sells our raffle and event tickets, more than anyone else.  He suggested that Becas raffle a motorcycle, sure that many of the guys in Vallarta would buy chances.  They did and, true to form, he singlehandedly sold almost all of the tickets.  He, like all our special friends, never turns down any request by Becas whether it be assisting with the scholarship student meetings or arranging flowers for an event.  He is truly a special friend.

ISABEL AND DAVID MANORE

Isabel and Dave live in Toronto, Canada part of the year, but spend the high season in Puerto Vallarta in their beautiful Boutique Hotel, Casa Isabel, overlooking Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone.  They have always made Becas Vallarta part of their Vallarta Family, giving special rates to friends of Becas staying with them, selling our books and tickets and supporting all of our efforts.  For the last six years they have thrown a wing-ding of a Mexican Fiesta at their Toronto Madison Avenue Pub to honor their dear friend, Bill Spence, and to raise funds for Becas Vallarta´s scholarships.  They invite all their friends and patrons to the Fiesta, cook up incredible Mexican food, have fabulous auction items and raise a heap of money.  This year, they outdid themselves bringing Becas a check for $10,000 (Canadian Dollars)!  Give us more such special friends!
