Let your imagination fly by making your own kite. Below are instructions explaining what you need and how to make your own kite at home. Ask your parent to help you and get to work!
- With a box cutter, carve a groove around the ends of the bamboo skewers. These grooves serve to secure the nylon thread in place giving shape to the kite.
- Place the skewers at right angles. Place the horizontal skewer 10cm below the top of the vertical skewer. Tie the skewers securely together. You can use a little white glue to secure the thread. This thread contour is the main structure of the kite. To make the rein of the kite, tie another nylon thread (30 m) around this center support.
- Tie thread around the grooves at the ends of the skewers, at the four corners of the cross. This forms a shape that helps support the kite.
- Place your frame over the tissue paper. Outline the shape of the kite, leaving a 3cm margin around each edge. Cut out the paper to form the “sail” of the kite. Cut away the corners. Fold the edges over the thread contour.
- Secure the sail in place using adhesive tape. Tie a 1m thread to the bottom of the center skewer. This will form the “tail” of the kite. Place the pencil through the thread spool and place one large rubber band at each end of the pencil to keep it from coming out of the spool. This is to make it easier to wind up the kite when in use.
- Cut 10 small 20cm pieces of the leftover tissue paper. Form bows with these pieces. Attach the 10 bows every 10cm along the tail thread. You are ready to fly!
